Laboratory staff have a variety of responsibilities.  Staff conduct in-house testing of mosquitoes and ticks, as well as collect ticks from throughout San Mateo County.  Residents or operations staff may submit insect samples to the District for entomology and vector ecology staff to identify.  Laboratory staff coordinate with other districts and the California Department of State Health Services…

Operation Staff consists of 10 Vector Control Technicians, a Supervisor, and a Director.  All staff are certified by the California Department of State Health Services as Public Health Vector Control Certified Technicians.  All staff maintain an active certification, which includes continuing education units and regular training.

Seasonal staff work during the summer months to help control mosquito populations.  Control efforts include the treatment of over 34,000 catch basins (drains under the street that may hold water that can grow mosquitoes) every two weeks throughout the warm summer months.  Regular treatments keep mosquitoes from breeding in the catch basins. Our staff maintain Vector Control Technician certifications from the California Department of Public Health. The certification requires that our staff receive continuing education in several topic areas. In January, several staff attended the annual Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California conference to earn credits. Some staff also presented findings from work within San Mateo County.
