Staff Training and Certification
Our field and laboratory staff maintain Vector Control Technician certifications from the California Department of Public Health. The certification process starts with 4 separate tests covering extensive material in each of the following categories: Pesticide Application and Safety, Biology and Control of Mosquitoes in California, Arthropods of Public Health Significance in California, and Vertebrates of Public Health Importance in California. To learn more about the process and see the kinds of materials these tests cover, visit the CDPH website.
Certified Vector Control Technicians maintain their certification by completing at least 36 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) every two years. Technicians typically meet these CEU requirements through attending presentations and conferences covering vector control topics. Each year, the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC) conference is attended by multiple staff from the District to acquire CEU credits; in addition, staff typically attend a variety of other conferences and remote presentations as scheduling allows.
As well as earning CEUs by attending presentations, our staff also regularly present at conferences and as invited speakers to present materials that count as CEU credits for other technicians. These presentations reflect the high level of knowledge and subject matter expertise that many of our staff have acquired through their education and training over their careers.
